Fear of the dark can by synthesized in a laboratory. Fear of the dark is an arrangement of fifteen amino acids. Fear of the dark is a protein.
–Joan Didion, A Book of Common Prayer
The era of free-market triumphalism has come to a juddering halt, and the crisis that destroyed Lehman Brothers in 2008 is now engulfing much of the rich world. The weakest countries, such as Greece, have already been plunged into chaos.
–‘The visible hand’, The Economist, 21 January 2012
We live in an overly public world, where private space is made to be invaded. The music we listen to. The materials we read. The things we do. They are constantly recorded. Not to amass a totalitarian database proposed by 1984, but to fulfill the momentary impression that everyone is busy constructing a special kind of labor: that of entertaining themselves, being entertained, and entertaining others.
The penultimate negative attribute is to fabricate boredom, to not be smart/creative/interesting enough to do do do, to not live perenailly on the verge of fulfillment.
From technological interactions to real life ones a void is formed. A break in how social interactions negotiate the perimeters of one's increasingly public, insular life on screen and IRL life. Anxieties projected by visually impressive technologies, set on a backdrop of fear that our world doesn't reflect the impressions we possess.
We know the speed of daily life has been ratcheted up. Our mythology is of an apocalypse, a collapse, a runaway mechanism locked in fourth gear. Yet the acceleration is never forever. It slows, sometimes gradually, sometimes with a crashing halt, others somewhere in between.
What is always is the post-acceleration comedown. A liminal space that carries the brunt force of halted motion, just before the next acceleration begins.

BCC #4: Art is not a Prize Fight. A regimented competition featuring twelve artists, decked-out model boats, and a set of precise instructions. The participating artists' creative liberties have been materially slimmed down by curatorial dictate: artists must use a readymade boat designed for children as their platform, and all additional flourish must be inspired from an emailed file, sent by another artist at the invitation of each competing artist. With their artistic prowess bound, success before their peers is dependent upon the strength of their lungs - and the ability to blow it.
